Dr. Douglas B. Berkey is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine where he served as the Chair of the Department of Applied Dentistry and as a faculty member for 28 years. While at CU, he was awarded the Rocky Mountain Study Club Professor of the Year. He is the past Chairman and continues to serve on the Board of Trustees for Delta Dental of Colorado and is also the Editor-in-Chief of Dental Abstracts, an internationally respected oral health journal. He is a member of the American Dental Association’s National Elder Care Advisory Committee and was a past ADA delegate to the Joint Commission. Dr. Berkey provided over a decade of state leadership in geriatric dentistry as Co-Director of Colorado’s Center on Aging and as Dental Director for InnovAge Greater Colorado PACE. He has published over 70 articles in peer reviewed periodicals and textbooks on geriatric oral health topics and has lectured throughout the world. He was honored to be the keynote speaker for the first geriatric dental conferences in both China and South America. He was awarded the Knuemann Distinguished Professorship in Geriatric Dentistry at the University of North Carolina and also a visiting professorship at the Hadassah School of Dental Medicine in Jerusalem, Israel. He is a Pew National Dental Leadership Fellow and was the first place recipient of the ADA Geriatric Oral Health Care Award. He has served in various leadership capacities within the International Association for Dental Research, American Dental Education Association, and Fédération Dentaire Internationale. Following dental school at the University of Louisville and after three years in private practice in northern Idaho, Dr.Berkey was awarded a scholarship to the University of Minnesota where he received an MPH in Dental Public Health as well as the first ever masters degree in geriatric dentistry. He has owned three dental practices in Idaho, Minnesota, and Colorado.
